March 2004:_2002
Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. We would like to introduce you to one of the best living experiences at Penn Med: Nu Sigma Nu. We are a co-ed, medical student co-op here at Penn Med, a remnant of a bygone era of medical student fraternities. While each of the other fraternities has dismantled, we alone remain at Penn Med because in 1920 our alumni association had the foresight to purchase our house. This places us in a very unique position to offer a cheap, sociable, and convenient housing option for students, a meeting place for various school functions, and service to the medical school community. While the house began as a medical student fraternity, it is so today in name only: there is no national organization, there is no hazing, and there are no weird rituals -- just a friendly group of people who enjoy living together.
Our house has four stories, ten bedrooms, a newly renovated library, cable modem internet connection, living room with digital cable TV/VCR/DVD, a pool room, a fully equipped kitchen, two newly renovated bathrooms, washer/dryer, a basement with recently renovated bar, and a recently paved driveway for off street parking. Yes, we've been busy fixing things up around here and there's always a little something to do -- within the next year we plan on renovating the kitchen. Incidentally, The John Morgan Building, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the VA Medical Center, and Presbyterian Hospital are all within a few blocks. Rent is under $275 per month, all utilities and household supplies included. (No, that's not a typo!).
There's a lot going on at the Nu. During orientation week, we organize the famous MedVentures for incoming students. In the fall, we host the annual Bar-Crawl and Post-Bar-Crawl BBQ and the annual Post-Gross Anatomy Party. We also hold various smaller gatherings, a Holiday Dinner, and an annual Barbecue for visiting alumni. From time to time we host students visiting from other medical schools and other countries; in the past, we've had visitors from Russia, Sweden, and Argentina to name a few.
With its history, the diversity of its members, and the service it provides the Penn Med community, Nu Sigma Nu offers a unique living opportunity. If you came to medical school not only to study, but to really get involved, have a seemingly balanced life, and have a good time, then living at The Nu might be perfect for you. We are looking for people who are social and fun to be around; people who are truly excited about living in a group house. There will be several open spots, so we encourage anyone (and everyone) who thinks they may benefit from living at the Nu to fill out our form ( click here) and get it to us as soon as possible. Please feel free to drop by the house and check it out anytime. We look forward to meeting you.
Sincerely,
Chuck,Tim, Mike, Ibe, Heather, Kevin, Defne, Stu, and Jeff
